Dewey Avenue Chapel - 1954
Crutchfield Heights Baptist Church began as Dewey Avenue Chapel in 1954 as a mission of First Baptist Church of Sherman.
On May 25, 1954, four lots were purchased in our current location on Dewey Avenue, where a small one room dwelling stood but was not yet completed. This was the first Chapel.
In June 1954, Rev. James Giles became the first pastor of the Dewey Avenue Chapel.
May 5, 1956, a new sanctuary was built. It is still in use today as our fellowship hall.
In March of 1960, First Baptist Church granted the enrollment at Dewey Avenue Chapel their letters to become members of the Chapel.
On April 3, 1960, Dewey Avenue Chapel became an independent church. The new name chosen by the congregation was Crutchfield Heights Baptist Church.
Between 1956 and 1964, a Sunday School building was built. While several changes have been made over the years, this building is still in use today.
In 1964, the current sanctuary was built with the help of the men and women of the church. It was updated around 1980 and several small changes have been made since. It is now undergoing its most extensive renovation since its original construction.
In 1965, a parsonage was purchased and was used by many pastors over the years. In 2025, the parsonage was renovated and sold to fund improvement projects and renovations on the church buildings.
The story continues....more pictures will be added once the renovations are complete. No matter what changes have taken place over the years to the facilities, the mission remains the same, to be disciples of Jesus that make more disciples in Sherman Texas and beyond.
